Maharashtra assembly's winter session has borne the brunt of COVID-19 with nearly 55 people that included two ministers, police officers, house staffers and journalists covering the proceedings have tested positive for coronavirus, reports stated.

Those among who have tested positive include Ministers Varsha Gaikwad, K C Padavi and Sameer Meghe, BJP lawmaker. Gaikwad took to Twitter to declare that she had tested positive for the virus.

According to reports, more than 2,300 people were tested for COVID-19 at the camp put up for those either attending or covering the session. With the session due to end on Tuesday, December 28, it was curtailed for a duration of five days considering the increase in coronavirus cases.

On Monday, December 27, the number of active cases breached the 10,000 threshold after falling to 6,200 three weeks before. In light of the surge in cases, the state government has imposed a night curfew that prohibits more than five people from meeting in public places between 9 pm and 6 am.

Moreover, the number of attendees should not be more than 100 for other social, political and religious events. While for open spaces, the number of attendees should not increase by over 250 or 25 per cent of the capacity of the space whichever is less.
