The Maharashtra government has declared specifications of shoes and socks to be given with uniforms, which were declared before two months.

It is pertinent to note that Maharashtra’s one-state-one-uniform policy to provide two sets of uniforms for children studying in government schools (Classes 1 to 8) is marred with delays. In October 2023, the uniforms declared are still awaited due to debate over stitching rate.

The school education department has issued a circular on specifications for shoes and socks, which includes details like shape and design, soling pattern, sole hardness among all, along with colour and lace/buckle related information.

The circular noted that the state-provided uniforms for government schools will have black shoes which will have laces for boys and buckles for girls. One set of shoes will be paired with two sets of socks which will be plain, knitted nylon socks which could be navy blue, grey or black in colour.

The specifications, according to the circular by the state’s school education department, have been finalised by the Technology Development Centre from Meerut working under the Ministry of Micro Small and Medium enterprise (MSME).

The respective school managements have been tasked to purchase them as per the recommendations. As the government is going to provide funds for the same, the state has already declared that it has allocated INR 170 per student for shoes and socks.

According to schools, the allotted amount is too small to be able to provide good quality shoes and socks to students. After having allotted Rs 600 for two sets of uniforms, the government has a fixed fee of Rs 150 per uniform for stitching. MAVIM is demanding an increase in the amount.
