From this month, Mumbaikars will have to pay 5 to 10 per cent more for their electricity.

As per Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC)’s new rates, the fixed cost for residential consumers is likely to be increased by INR 13.

This move comes after the MERC agreed to the distribution companies' proposal of a price hike and announced the out-of-turn hike.

Simultaneously, four electricity distribution companies – Tata Power, Adani Electricity, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd (MSEDCL), and Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply (BEST) in Maharashtra have also increase the charges. Therefore, consumers from all categories such as domestic, commercial, industrial and agricultural will be affected by this hike.

On the other hand, when the power companies sent its proposal to hike the electricity charges, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had assured that the state government will ensure the proposed hike in electricity tariffs is not irrational.
