Maharashtra has experienced a 60 per cent decrease in monsoon rainfall from August 1 to August 25, compared to the five-year average. This significant rain deficit has left the region dry. In response to this, water tankers are being deployed to supply drinking water to the affected villages.

Almost 50 times more tankers are being dispatched to villages compared to the same period last year. As of August 28 this year, 386 tankers were providing essential water. This has increased from the mere 7 deployed on August 29, 2022. Western Maharashtra and northern Maharashtra are the most affected, with 167 and 135 tankers in operation, respectively.

In response to this, the central government held a meeting with the states to address the nationwide rainfall shortage. Officials have issued mid-season setback notifications in 13 districts across Maharashtra. They have asked district collectors to request crop surveys as part of the Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme.

Despite a 39% excess of rainfall in July, the consistently dry August has left the soil inadequately hydrated. This is also expected to significantly impact agricultural production. Particularly, the cultivation of pulses has suffered, with a 25% reduction compared to the five-year average. Cereal cultivation has also declined by 14%.

Data reveals substantial decreases in the area sown with jowar and bajra by 62% and 46%, respectively. Pulse cultivation, including moong dal (55% decrease), urad dal (32% decrease), and tur dal (14% decrease), has been severely affected too. Sesame seed cultivation has dwindled by 70% and sunflower seed cultivation by 80% compared to the five-year average.

Officials also expect ongoing challenges. This includes pressure on drinking water and further losses for farmers. The situation is under continuous monitoring, with authorities committed to providing relief to distressed farmers.
