Soon drones will be deployed in major prisons by the Maharashtra government for surveillance in the state, an official said on Tuesday.
As part of its prison modernization drive, the government is planning to buy a dozen Micro Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones fitted with cameras) valued at INR 1.8 crore and four X-Ray baggage inspection systems valued at INR 1.94 crore.

On Monday, the home department sanctioned funds to purchase modern security-related equipment for the prisons department, he added. Drones with cameras will help in monitoring the activities of prison inmates and will also enhance their safety, the official said.
