Maharashtra Govt Introduces New Strategy To Enhance Energy Storage Capacity

In a significant move, the Maharashtra government has decided to form a strategy for pumped hydropower storage (PHS) projects. The decision was made in a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday, October 10. The plan aims to encourage private investment in the hydropower sector.

PHS technology involves two reservoirs at different heights connected by a tunnel or underground pipe. The system pumps water from the lower to the higher reservoir during periods of excess electricity generation and low demand. When more power is needed, water is released through a turbine from the higher to the lower reservoir, generating energy instantly. This technology effectively maintains peak power and grid stability.

Currently, the state produces 10,757 MW of non-conventional energy. However, this capacity is projected to reach 25,000 MW by 2025. Despite these advancements, neither wind nor solar energy alone can meet the state's energy needs.

The grid may also face challenges due to capacity shortages in renewable energy. Therefore, energy storage systems play a crucial role, as they can balance the grid by supplying energy from storage systems to other traditional power plants.

The PHS system can provide energy during power generation breakdowns or interruptions. According to reports, the policy would promote the development of megawatt-level energy storage capacity in the PHS system. It will also encourage pumped hydroelectric, solar hybrid power, and inter-basin transfer projects.

The Union Ministry of Energy also supports PHS projects nationwide. Later on, developers will be selected either through direct allocation or a tender process with mutual consent.
