According to reports, the Maharashtra government led by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is contemplating a lockdown in the state in order to further strengthening the restrictions as several cases of violations were reported last week.

Meanwhile, several districts, affected by COVID-19, including Mumbai, have decided to impose tougher restrictions in view of the rising number of coronavirus cases.

In Aurangabad and Solapur, essential services shop would be allowed to open till 1 pm only. On the other hand, in recent developments, the Ahmednagar administration has announced that for the next 14 days, barring medical shops, all essential businesses, including petrol pumps, would be permitted to open only for four hours. In Pune, all shops, barring medical units, were shut today. In Ratnagiri, all essential shops have been shut and only home deliveries are allowed. In Nashik, cabinet minister Chaggan Bhujbal had supported the need for a complete lockdown.

Furthermore, in the last 24 hours, Maharashtra reported 68,631 fresh cases of the coronavirus and 508 new deaths. With 45,654 new recoveries, Maharashtra's cured tally rose to 31,06,838. The state has 38,39,338 cases of which 6,70,388 active cases and 60,473 deaths to date. Currently, 36,75,518 people are in-home quarantine and 26,529 people are in institutional quarantine.

Moreover, Maharashtra has classified Kerala, Goa, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Delhi and NCR and Uttarakhand as places of sensitive origin mandating a negative RT-PCR negative test within 48 hours for the passengers travelling to the state from these places.
