Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Panvel have emerged victorious in the state-wide Urban Development Competition sponsored by the Maharashtra government. The competition was based on "city beautification and cleanliness".

It saw Navi Mumbai Municipal Corproation (NMMC) and Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) winning the first position in their respective categories, and Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) coming in second.

The award ceremony was held on Thursday, April 20, at Mumbai's National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), where the state Chief Minister Eknath Shinde presented the prizes to NMMC commissioner Rajesh Narvekar and PMC commissioner Ganesh Deshmukh. They received a citation and a payment of INR 15 crore.

Navi Mumbai has consistently performed well in all spheres and received the highest "water plus" grade in the ODF category and a five-star certification in the category for garbage-free cities. Along with cleaning, the civic body put a lot of effort into making the city look beautiful by using creative concepts like paintings on walls, sculptures made from recyclable materials, fountains, poems on the walls, etc. The CM commended the beautification of Navi Mumbai and said it was done across the city, not just in the main chowks and public areas.

On the other hand, Panvel completed Wadale Lake's international standard conservation and beautifying in accordance with their long-term water body plan. The award recognises their achievement and will help create their own identity at the national level.

The award selection committee was impressed by the fact that the beautification will stay. According to Deshmukh, this achievement was made possible by the elected officials and residents' enthusiastic involvement in the city's growth.
