The state administration will soon offer training to gun licence applicants across Maharashtra. This training will cover the correct handling and storage of weapons and ammunition. The training will be given by police officers over a three-day session.

The government is currently reviewing proposals from various district magistrates. These proposals are for the permission of the buying and selling of new arms and ammunition, as well as minor repair licences.

Rule 10 of the Arms Rules, 2016, mandates training in the handling and safekeeping of arms. But, the Union Government's Ministry of Home Affairs is responsible for formulating guidelines in this area.

Until the Central Government issues guidelines regarding approved trainers, applicants seeking licences will receive training from Armed Police Officers of the Police Training Centre. This is in line with the directives provided by the Central Government.

The training plan will cover a range of topics. These include the basics of weapons, firearm types, their manufacture, qualities and flaws, security measures, disassembly, assembly, and cleaning of weapons, ammunition and technical information, load and unload of arms, maintaining discipline when handling arms, handling weapons, firing basics, different firing positions, controlling trigger and fire, and dry firing practice.

The cost of the training programme is INR 1,000. Those who successfully complete the programme will receive a certificate. The training will last for three days.

Applicants wishing to receive the licence must submit an application for training to the responsible Commissioner of Police, Superintendent of Police, or Commissioner, State Reserve Police Force. The reason for the training and the corresponding licence must be specified in the application.
