Maharashtra is rolling out a INR 6,500 crore urban water supply project with support from the World Bank, aiming to provide 24-hour water supply in cities and enhance sewage treatment and recycling. The project will strengthen urban water infrastructure, improve distribution systems, and promote the reuse of treated wastewater, reducing pressure on freshwater sources.

A major focus of the initiative is to ensure effective sewage treatment and reuse, helping fast-growing cities manage rising water demand sustainably. It will also assist municipal bodies in improving financial management and operational efficiency of water services.

By encouraging the use of treated wastewater for non-drinking purposes like industrial use, the scheme aims to conserve potable water and support a circular water economy. Overall, this World Bank-supported project is expected to play a key role in tackling urban water scarcity and improving sanitation infrastructure across Maharashtra.
