The Maharashtra health department is looking to hold a statewide sero survey to examine the level of COVID-19 antibodies amongst the many districts and groups, reported the Times of India. Maharashtra Health Minister, Rajesh Tope stated that he will ask for permission from the Chief Minister to hold a sero-survey through all the 36 districts in the state. Whilst there have been many sero surveys across the many cities in the state such as Pune, Nagpur and Mumbai, a state-wide survey hasn’t been undertaken. Interestingly, the city of Mumbai has undertaken five sero surveys yet.

According to the report, Tope elaborated on how Kerala recently finished a state-wide study that highlighted significant levels of antibodies amongst many groups and districts, thus, he recommends that Maharashtra should also conduct one on similar lines. He added that they will be required to gather a large sample for every district for the study.

The account also quoted a member of the state COVID-19 task force, Dr Shashank Joshi who elucidated on how a survey across the state will enable them to comprehend the stage of immunity against the Delta variant. He further mentioned that in spite of opening facilities and socialization, there hasn’t been a significant surge in cases. Therefore, it has become important to comprehend if this is because of vaccination or immunity against the Delta variant. Further mentioning that genome survey across the state needs to be undertaken.
