The Maharashtra government's School Education Department has decided to provide healthy and nutritious food to the students of classes 1 to 8 in government and government-aided schools of the state.

The school education department on Tuesday evening, November 7, issued a detailed government resolution on the enhanced MDM menu.

The state government appointed a committee headed by celebrity chef Vishnu Manohar of the Vishnu ki Rasoi chain of restaurants to suggest improvements in the state’s midday meal menu to enhance the quality and nutritional value of students’ diets in March.

After conducting a review of the committee’s suggestions and recommendations, the state education department decided to introduce eggs as a part of midday meals at least twice a week, either boiled or in the form of egg biryani or pulao.

The decision will be implemented in the ongoing (2023-24) academic year under Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman Scheme, it said.

This is the first time that the school education department has incorporated eggs and bananas into the midday meal menu in addition to regular diet.

As per the statement, school students will be given food in the form of boiled egg or egg pulao, biryani on Wednesdays or Fridays. Students who do not eat eggs will be provided bananas or in exceptional cases local fruits instead of eggs. This initiative will continue for 23 weeks. Keeping in mind the current market price of eggs, the rate of INR 5 per egg has been fixed.

The School Education Department has directed to implement this program through the School Management Committee in rural areas and through the arrangement of food supply and cooking through the Central Kitchen System in urban areas.

Under this initiative, it is necessary to provide additional nutritious food to the students in addition to regular nutrition, so that the students get the benefit of the nutritional value of eggs, the education department has taken this decision.
