In the financial year 2024-25, Maharashtra recorded marine product exports worth INR 7,343.40 crore, nearly doubling compared to INR 3,684 crore in 2020-21. The export volume also increased, reaching around 2.27 lakh metric tons annually, with shrimp and frozen fish contributing the largest share.
High demand from major markets such as the United States and China has driven this growth, with Konkan shrimp gaining popularity overseas due to its superior quality and taste. Fisheries Development Minister Nitesh Rane has continuously worked to modernise the fisheries sector, improve infrastructure, and boost export capacity, helping fishermen in the Konkan region access global markets directly.
The U.S. emerged as India’s largest market for fish exports, with shipments worth INR 22,723 crore in 2024-25, followed by China (INR 10,668 crore), the European Union, Southeast Asia, and Japan.
Despite challenges like international market fluctuations and rising production costs, Maharashtra has maintained its competitive position alongside other leading states such as Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.
