As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, Maharashtra topped the country over cases registered regarding online bullying and stalking of women and children.

In its Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India 2022 Report, which was revealed on Monday, December 4, the state also saw the highest cases of robberies, thefts and motor vehicle thefts across Maharashtra.

The state also tops when it comes to cases of voyeurism.

Apart from crimes related to women, the state registered maximum cases in the category of “offences related to religion” and cases against people for “deterring a public servant from performing duty”.

In addition, the state also saw highest number of suicide with 84 cases, accounting to nearly half the number in the country.

A total of 174 suicides were recorded by the NCRB in 2022, of which 84 were recorded in Maharashtra, followed by Gujarat with 42, Uttar Pradesh 22 suicides and Madhya Pradesh 12.

Over the past few months, Maharashtra seen a substantial number of suicides that are said to have been fuelled by the Maratha reservation protest.

The state has also reported the highest number of suicides in the country with 22,746 cases. Maharashtra also ranked first in suicides due to bankruptcy and marriage related issues.

In cities, Mumbai ranked fourth in the number of suicides reported in 2022 with 1501 cases respectively.

Family related issues are cited as the leading cause of suicides in the state with 6,961 cases categorised as such, followed by relationship issues at 6,477. Around 378 people ended their lives due to failure in examinations, the report said.

Unemployment, poverty and career issues were also cited as reasons for suicide in 2022. As per the data, 642 died due to unemployment in Maharashtra, 402 due to poverty and 640 because of problems in their professional lives.
