Malls in Thane got a go-ahead to open from September 2. This was taken by the civic administration and as a result of the same, City Mall, Korum Mall and Viviana Mall got set to welcome their first set of customers.

The state government had allowed the opening of the malls in Thane along with the rest of the state a month back. However, keeping the rising number of cases of coronavirus in the Thane district, Dr. Vipin Sharma, Commissioner of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) decided against it. Not just mall but even markets and complexes were also kept closed. However, now a month later when the cases have started to decline, TMC has given permission to malls and markets to resume operations.

While the malls have started operations, it is to be seen what the footfalls will be. Given that the malls resumed operations in the middle of the week, it is to be seen how people in Thane react to this move. In Navi Mumbai, the malls had to be shut down after a day of resuming operations due to the fear of rising cases.

In Mumbai, the malls had opened from August 5 despite the heavy rainfall that had been lashing the city. On August 3, the BMC issued a circular which permitted shopping malls and complexes to resume operations from Wednesday, between 9 am and 7 pm. However, theatres, restaurants and food courts are yet to receive permission from the civic body to restart their services. The kitchen of restaurants in food courts can, however, opt for home delivery through aggregators.
