The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took action against 176 shops on Tuesday, November 28.

The civic body has issued prosecution notices to 176 entities on the first day of its crackdown against those establishments without signboards in Marathi (Devnagri).

The BMC has inspected 3,269 shops and commercial establishments. Of which 3,093 have set up signboards displaying the name of their shops in Marathi Devanagari script. Only 5 per cent (176) of the total entities were non-compliant with the rules.

The notices were served under section 35 of the State Shops and Establishments Act, and these entities must now appear in Bombay High Court which, following the judgement, will decide on the amount of penalty to be levied on them, Sanjog Kabre, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Special) told The Indian Express.

A team of senior inspectors of shops were formed in 24 wards by Sanjog Kabare, deputy municipal commissioner (special), and notices were served to more than 3,000 non-compliant shops in just nine days.

An official stated that the teams have been deployed at the ward level comprising officials from the licence department, and the drive will continue till all 8 lakh shops registered under BMC comply. However, in the past year several of them have set up new signboards in Marathi.
