On Friday, April 9, despite the surge in cases of coronavirus, a massive crowd was reportedly witnessed at the Dadar market in Mumbai.

Even though the administration has been taking steps to contain the spread of COVID-19, the protocols went for a toss at the crowded Dadar market today. Not only were people witnessed flouting social distancing norms, but citizens were also wandering without masks as well.

Earlier, the Dadar traders' union had opposed the state government's two-day mini-lockdown from Friday night to Monday morning in the area. All shops in the Dadar area had been closed on Tuesday, April 6, morning. The traders’ union have stated that the rules issued regarding the lockdown are confusing. Moreover, due to a lack of proper coordination in these regulations, an atmosphere of confusion has been created.

For the past couple of days, pictures of huge crowds gathered at Mumbai’s Dadar vegetable market has been making news. This comes at a time when the city has been posting an alarming spike in coronavirus cases. In view of the situation, earlier on April 4, Guardian Minister Aslam Shaikh visited the Dadar vegetable market to inspect the situation and to interact with vegetable sellers.

On other hand, earlier on Thursday, April 8, Maharashtra witnessed a slight dip in the daily number of coronavirus cases. The state reported 56,286 new COVID-19 cases. However, Maharashtra also recorded the maximum casualties on April 8. With 376 deaths, the state reported the highest number of deaths in a single day since October last year. On October 16, 2020, Maharashtra had reported 306 deaths.
