Amidst the festivities, the Pune-Mumbai Expressway experienced extreme overcrowding due to a massive amount of vehicles congesting earlier in the week on Sunday, November 15.

With people leaving the city of Mumbai for Pune to celebrate Bhaubeej and Padwa, which fell on Monday, a massive volume of traffic was reported on the Expressway which led to the management of the toll booth at Khalapur to let motorists pass without paying the toll fee to ease congestion. Moreover, the State Transport buses coming to Pune from Mumbai reached Swargate with a delay of at least three hours. This delayed departure of buses from Pune.

As per reports, the MSRTC had planned to deploy 500 extra buses for migrant workers from across Maharashtra this Diwali. The number is far less than the extra buses the MSRTC plies every year during Diwali, often up to 1,500 buses.

Citizens across the city have been using the BEST and State Transport (ST) buses to commute in Mumbai. In the last few months, officials have risked their lives to ensure that the services are functional, especially with the local trains ferrying essential service personnel only. Amidst this, several MSRTC employees were also infected with the coronavirus with many succumbing to the disease.
