Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday announced ₹1,000 crores financial package for the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) which has been cash-strapped for a while now.

Efforts are being made to ensure that MSRTC employees get their full salary at the earliest. This comes after the opposition cornered Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government over the suicide of two MSRTC workers.

A meeting was held with Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar regarding the package for MSRTC after discussions with the Chief Minister on Monday.

Maharashtra Transport Minister Anil Parab had informed that the state government has announced a package of ₹1,000 crores as financial assistance for the MSRTC for the next six months. He announced that a month’s salary will be paid by Monday and the remaining dues for two months will be cleared before Diwali along with a bonus.

Parab, who also serves as the chairperson of MSRTC, earlier said that they have asked for ₹3,000 crores from the state government and ₹1,000 crores is expected to be received this month.

The ST employees committed suicide within a span of 12 hours. In his suicide note, one of the workers blamed the Uddhav Thackeray government for non-payment of dues and reduction in salaries.

“ST workers need not be disheartened and should not take any extreme step. We have asked the banks for a loan for their salaries,” Parab said.

During the lockdown period, the losses of the corporation have gone up to ₹5,500 crores. MSRTC needs ₹292 crores per month for payment of salaries to its workers.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded Parab’s arrest while holding the Uddhav Thackeray government over the suicide of ST worker Manoj Chaudhary.
