Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Ashish Shelar slammed the Congress for accusing former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of excluding over 60 hectares from the Aarey Eco-Sensitive for commercial gain.

Shelar said that the decision to commercially exploit the three-hectare plot at Aarey was approved by Congress leader Prithiviraj Chavan in May 2014. Chavan has served as the chief minister of Maharashtra.

This comes after Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant accused Fadnavis of approving 60-hectare land from the Aarey Eco-Sensitive Zone for commercial gain instead of 20 hectares. He also said that Fadnavis has cheated Mumbaikars for 5 years by politicising the Mumbai Metro project.

Reacting to this, Shelar informed that the Devendra Fadnavis government had explored all options before starting the construction for Metro 3 car shed at Aarey. The BJP leader said that the Fadnavis government quashed the Congress government’s decision to commercially exploit the three-hectare plot at Aarey.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray should provide assurance that the land at Aarey colony will not be commercially exploited, Shelar said.

The Devendra Fadnavis government intended to raise ₹1,000 crores from the commercial exploration of the land.

Speaking on centre’s objection to constructing Metro 3 car shed in Kanjurmarg, Sawant said that the land at Kanjurmarg has belonged to the state government since 1969.

Meanwhile, Shelar has claimed that Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray has refused to debate the Aarey car shed issue. He had challenged Thackeray for an open discussion in the matter.
