Every year, lakhs of Mumbaikars wait to claim affordable houses through the lottery system made by Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority (MHADA) in an expensive city like Mumbai. Each year MHADA announces the lottery until May 31 but now Mumbaikars will have to wait for some more time.

However, there is some good news for the lower economic groups in Mumbai that there will be 783 houses for them and only two houses will be left for the higher class to purchase. This means that more than 75 per cent of the lottery houses will be for the low-income groups.

Unlike earlier years, this time MHADA's main objective is to focus on the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) for them to purchase the houses constructed by them. Earlier, MHADA has been criticised for focusing on the middle and upper class’ needs to buy houses.

Considering the criticism, MHADA announced that they will include more houses for the EWS and Lower Income Group (LIG). Mumbai Live has come to know that MHADA has 1000 lottery houses this year.

According to the data, 283 houses will be given to LIG and 500 houses will be for the EWS. It has come out that 215 houses are for the Middle Income Group (MIG) and only two for the Higher Income Group (HIG) in Pant Nagar.

However, MHADA has not yet decided the price for the houses. Also, the advertising process for the same is also lagging behind. The ads should have been carried out in the first week of April but the same has not come out yet. Thus, the date for the lottery has been delayed and postponed. MHADA’s Joint Chief Executive Officer, Sanjay Bhagwat informed Mumbai Live that the process will start from June.
