According to the latest reports, in the backdrop of the approaching monsoons, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has commenced pre-monsoon works. It has been reported that it is on the lookout for an expert agency to conduct desilting nullahs, rivers and drains along the Western Express Highway (WEH).

The said activity is stated to be a yearly exercise that the MMRDA undertakes prior to every monsoon season. The objective is to curtail waterlogging.

However, in spite of these activities being undertaken and a considerable amount being spent over the same, locations such as the Andheri subway, Khar subway, amongst others get flooded yearly.

Based on accounts, the MMRDA has floated five tenders and divided the desilting work in each tender into five categories. The work scope in each segment costs more than INR 1 crore each. This means, that the desilting along the WEH will cost more than INR 25 crore.

The MMRDA was quoted in narratives elaborating on how the appointed agency apart from undertaking desilting work has to see to it that requisite manpower is supplied for the activity. Including the rainy season, the work time period is six months.

Specifications have also been made that the successful bidder will be given only one work and won't be eligible for the remaining bids. While other roads are under the jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and other government agencies, the MMRDA looks into the Western and Eastern Express Highways.
