On Tuesday, November 16, the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) accorded its approval to the concretization of the Western and Eastern Express Highways, stated reports.

This move is anticipated to provide motorists with a pothole-free experience whilst travelling through the said roads by 2025. During the meeting on Tuesday, the MMRDA also provided its approval to the extension of the Eastern Freeway till Thane.

Based on reports, officials from the MMRDA stated that only a 14-km, 5-plus-5 lane section of the 26km Western Express Highway (WEH) between Andheri and Dahisar will be concretized for now.

On the other hand, the 10km patch between Bandra and Andheri will not be taken up presently since it has been asphalted. Thus, it is presently under the contractor defect liability period. Therefore, that patch will be concretized in the second phase.

Similarly, on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), a mere two lines each on either side between Sion and Mulund will be concretized. The authority will divide the work into five sections so as to ensure appropriate deployment of resources to timely complete the work.

Work on the WEH will cost INR 750cr, whilst that of the EEH is anticipated to cost INR 300cr. With tenders expected to be floated soon, work is looked to begin in March 2022 and be completed in two years.

Moreover, the MMRDA has been asked to maintain both WEH and EEH since some patches have Metro-concerned activities going on.
