Activists and people have been opposing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Tree Authority's decision to cut 2,700 trees in Aarey colony for the construction of Metro 3 car shed. Several celebrities and politicians have joined the ongoing Save Aarey (Aarey Bachao) movement.
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar have also extended their support to the movement. Raj Thackeray strongly opposed the decision in a video posted on his Twitter handle while Mangeshkar said that cutting so many trees in Aarey would lead to disastrous effects.
Talking about sustainable development and citing the example of Manhattan in the video, the MNS chief said that a park or a jungle play a major role in maintaining the health of a city.
Do people want development by destroying greenery or through the means of sustainable development? In New York, it was essential to build a park but in Mumbai, the same has been gifted to us by nature. However, we are destroying it,” said Raj Thackeray.

To cut down 2700 trees and invade the natural habitat for so many species would be a tragedy. I firmly oppose this move and I earnestly request the government to look into this matter and save the forest.#SaveAareyForest
