The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted 'light to moderate rain' in Mumbai and its suburbs on Tuesday. It said that the city would witness a partly cloudy sky throughout the day. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that a high tide of about 3.83 metres is expected in Mumbai at 3:10 pm today. The civic body also said that a low tide of about 1.11 metres is likely to occur tonight at 9.09 pm.

According to BMC data, the island city, eastern and western suburbs received an average rainfall of 2.54 mm, 7.54 mm and 9.22 mm respectively in the 24 hours ending 8:00 am. Meanwhile, the IMD said on July 31 that India is expected to record normal rainfall during the second half of the monsoon season after excessive rainfall in July, although El Nino and other adverse conditions may prevent rains in August.

About 30 percent of the rainfall occurs in August during the monsoon season. Although El Nino has not affected the performance of the monsoon so far due to the warming of the waters in the Pacific Ocean near South America, it will affect the second phase of the monsoon. (August-September period).

El Nino is usually associated with weakened monsoon winds and dry weather over India. The IMD had earlier warned that El Nino could affect the second half of the southwest monsoon.
