At a time when the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is in the process of installing underground garbage bins in the premises of hospitals, the civic body has now taken this project to suburbs.

The civic body will set up such bins at 12 locations in the eastern suburbs. Some wards of the western suburbs have placed their demand before the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Department for similar arrangements in their area.

BMC officials are now identifying places to install dustbins. “Will coordinate with the ward after identifying the sites and a map of underground utilities in the area will be taken. Once the location is decided, the tendering process will begin."

Garbage disposal facility

In June, the BMC floated a tender to install 15 underground garbage bins in civic hospitals; Six in Parel's KEM, four in Sion Hospital, two in Kasturba and three in TB Hospital, Sewri. According to the officials, this advanced facility will prevent foul smell of the garbage and stray animals will not throw the garbage here and there as it will not spread the dirt here and there.

Hence, dustbins will help in keeping the hospital premises neat and clean. The estimated cost of the project has been pegged at ₹2.44 crore, while the coaches will come with a one-year warranty and a two-year maintenance contract.
