Monsoons to arrive in Mumbai this week

According to reports, for the fourth consecutive day, the monsoons reportedly made steady progress and as of Sunday, reached Alibaug.

On Sunday, June 6, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the arrival of the Southwest monsoon over Pune. Moreover, by Sunday afternoon, it had covered around 30 per cent of Maharashtra and entered Pune and Raigad districts.

The IMD further informed that the monsoons are likely to reach Mumbai this week. Usually, the date for the onset of monsoons is June 11. According to reports, for the fourth consecutive day, the monsoons reportedly made steady progress and as of Sunday, reached Alibaug.  

Meanwhile, good rainfall has been forecasted across the country this year. The monsoon arrived ahead of time in various parts of India. So far, the monsoon has hit Goa, parts of Maharashtra, South Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and parts of Telangana, Tamil Nadu.

Furthermore, with the monsoon now active over most of the southern districts of the state, the 24-hour rainfall recorded on Sunday till 8.30 am was — 16.3 mm in Mumbai (Santacruz), 31.9 mm in Satara, 28 mm in Mahabaleshwar, 21 mm in Sangli, 20 mm in Ratnagiri, 7.7 mm in Dahanu, 25.2 mm in Baramati and 4 mm in Solapur.

On the other hand, Mumbai received persistent spells of rain as a result of Cyclone Tauktae and its proximity to the city’s coast. Several trees were also uprooted as a result of the severe winds that followed. Moreover, data showed that around 230mm of rainfall hit the city during the cyclonic storm.

The data shared by IMD further illustrates that Mumbai has already witnessed 1,105 per cent excess pre-monsoon rain between March 1 and May 31 as a result of Tauktae. Furthermore, the city recorded 304mm of rainfall as compared to the season average of 20.2mm.
