Every year, several birds and humans get injured or killed after being tangled in the Manjha (kite string).
According to the report received this year, more than 70 birds were injured in Mumbai and a man (a newly married engineer) was also killed during the celebrations. Similar incidents happen across the country on various occasions when people fly kites with sharp Chinese strings.
The deceased named Gitesh Patare (29) lost his life on Sunday night while trying to get away with a flying kite. The kite got in the way of Wadala resident while he was on his motorcycle. He was rushed to hospital but was declared dead on admission.

It was also reported that earlier on Tuesday evening, 70 injured birds were treated at an animal hospital in Parel. 28 pigeons, 3 eagles, 2 owls, 4 cuckoos and 2 parrots were injured by the manjha during flying kites and were brought to the hospital. More than 60 birds were injured in Meera-Bhayandar as they were trapped in a kite string.
