The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) will soon implement postpaid and prepaid smart electricity meters to address consumer complaints of inflated power bills. The meters will be first set up in regions like Mumbai suburban, Pune, Nagpur, and Aurangabad, officials said.

Energy Minister, Nitin Raut made the decision at a meeting held on Tuesday and instructed the department to install these smart meters in the assigned regions.

Talking about the functioning of these meters, an official said that it would be similar to postpaid and prepaid SIM cards. Consumers will have the ability to monitor their usage every day.

People familiar with the matter said that this would also deter theft of electricity as a message will be sent to the server when someone tampers with the meter. Officials added that this would also help avoid lengthy queues for bill payment while also saving electricity.
