The Maharashtra government has appointed a seven-member committee, headed by the MahaVitaran chairman and managing director, to streamline the procedure to provide relief to industrial consumers.

The committee has also been set up to keep a check and reconcile the outstanding electricity bills of the street lights and water supply schemes of the Gram Panchayats in the state.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has directed to submit a detailed report with necessary recommendations by August 15.

An important decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to temporarily stop the recovery of electricity bills of rural and local self-governing bodies. He also directed officials to not disconnect street lights and water supply schemes in rural/local and urban self-governing bodies of the state till the report of this committee is received.

The meeting was held in the committee hall of the Deputy Chief Minister's Office under the chairmanship of Deputy CM Ajit Pawar regarding the arrears of electricity payments for street lights of Gram Panchayats and water supply schemes of Gram Panchayats in the state.

Energy Minister Dr Nitin Raut, Rural Development Minister Hasan Mushrif, Co-operation Minister Balasaheb Patil, Additional Chief Secretary of Planning Department Debashish Chakraborty, Additional Chief Secretary of Water Supply Department Dr Sanjay Chahande, Additional Chief Secretary of Rural Development Rajesh Kumar, Principal Secretary of Finance Rajgopal Deora, Principal Secretary of Urban Development Mahesh Pathak, Principal Secretary of Energy Dinesh Waghmare and other senior officials were present.

Fifty per cent of the remaining amount, excluding penalty and interest on arrears of street lights and water supply schemes from Municipal Corporations, Municipalities and Gram Panchayats in the state, was decided to be paid to MSEDCL by the local bodies from the funds of the 14th Finance Commission. Accordingly, the Rural Development Department has paid the arrears to MSEDCL in four instalments. In this regard, MSEDCL has demanded the subsequent dues from the concerned department.

MSEDCL has constituted a state-level committee under the chairmanship of Water Supply Department, Rural Development Department, Urban Development Department, Energy Department and Additional Chief Secretary of MSEDCL under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary Water Supply and Sanitation Department to check and reconcile the arrears received earlier.
