The process to shut down the Mulund dumping ground began three years ago, but the work is still not over due to several reasons. The contractor was unable to solve the issue of management of the ash. It is the final residue of the scientific procedure on the waste.

Apart from this, other reasons that resulted in the delay in shutting down Mulund dumping ground was lack of manpower due to lockdown and monsoon. After Deonar, Mulund is the second-largest dumping ground in the city. It has been in use since 1967 and is spread over 24 hectares.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in June 2018 had appointed a consortium of Prakash Constrowell Ltd, Infotech International Ltd and EB Enviro Biotech Pvt Ltd to process the waste at the dump using the latest technology.

The Mulund dumping ground was supposed to be shut in a phase-wise manner over six years, which means till the end of 2024. However, even after three years, minimal work was done on the site. In July, the contractor handling the Mulund dumping ground project has sought an additional six months to conclude the project.

Minesh Pimple, Deputy Chief Engineer, Solid Waste Management (Projects), said that the contractors were unable to find a place to dump ash but have now managed to find a place. They are now adding machinery, and they are hoping that the project will now start in full swing.
