The Mulund dumping ground was to be fully closed by 2024. However, the contractor handling the project has sought an additional six months to conclude the project. Last year, the opposition alleged the BMC of abandoning this project.

While officials from the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Projects Department couldn’t offer precise information, they said that this project was delayed due to factors like the coronavirus pandemic and the monsoon.

On-site reports indicate that only 10 per cent of the work has been completed on this project so far. It’s worth pointing out that this project will cost ₹731 crores.

“Last year, not much work has been done. Earlier, due to the Covid-induced lockdown, the contractor faced a shortage of labourers and now with the onset of monsoon the work of reclaiming the land will not take place,” an official from the SWM Projects Department was quoted as saying by The Indian Express

Chief Engineer of the SWM Projects Department, Kishor Bhambure, confirmed the extension of the 2024 deadline. Officials said that managing machinery on the site during the monsoon is complicated as the region becomes soggy due to water formation.

Around 2,000 metric tonnes of waste was dumped at the Mulund dumping site every day until 2018. Since then, the garbage is transported to the dumping grounds in Kanjurmarg and Deonar. The Mulund dumping ground has been operational since 1967 and is the second-largest dumping site in Mumbai after Deonar.
