Mumbai is set to welcome its first bird park by 2027. The park will be built in Nahur, in the city’s eastern suburbs, and will cover 17,150 square meters. It is expected to be a unique space for both birds and visitors.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is spearheading the project. The park will be an extension of the Byculla Zoo. It will house both native and exotic bird species. The aviary will also include recreational facilities like a jogging track, volleyball and basketball courts, and a sports arena.

The park will be divided into themed zones such as the USA Zone, Australia Zone, and Africa Zone. Birds from these regions will be placed in these zones. An interpretation centre will also be built for ornithologists and bird enthusiasts.

The aviary will feature 22 bird species, including black swans, toco toucans, and white peafowls. These birds will be acquired through transfers and exchange programs from the Byculla Zoo. The Central Zoo Authority has already granted key permissions for this initiative.

The project will cost INR 100 crore to complete. The final layout is awaiting approval. It is expected by the end of December or early January. Once the layout is cleared, the tendering process will begin. Civic officials are expected to finish the park in two years.
