The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has urged citizens and Ganesh mandals to celebrate this year’s Ganeshotsav in an eco-friendly and plastic-free manner, with the civic body focusing on waste management, sustainable idols and responsible celebrations.
The appeal was made by Mayor Sujata Patil during a preparatory meeting attended by more than 75 Ganesh mandals, police officials and representatives of various civic authorities.
The Mayor called on mandals to use their celebrations to promote environmental awareness, health and cultural initiatives rather than focusing only on elaborate decorations.
Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde urged mandals to opt for idols made from Shadu clay and avoid plastic. Mandals have also been asked to keep separate bins for wet and dry waste at their pandals.
The NMMC will create more than 150 artificial immersion ponds across Navi Mumbai. Idols up to six feet in height will have to be immersed in these designated facilities in accordance with court directions.
The civic body has also introduced a single-window system for obtaining permissions for public Ganeshotsav celebrations. No permission fees will be charged to mandals this year.
To encourage smaller and environmentally friendly celebrations, the NMMC will organise the ‘Navi Mumbai Mayor Ganesh Darshan Competition 2026’. A special ‘Small Idol, Great Devotion’ award will be given to public mandals that install smaller idols.
Officials have also urged citizens to conserve water and avoid wastage during the festival.
The civic administration said the focus this year will be on ensuring that Navi Mumbai’s Ganeshotsav remains festive while reducing its environmental impact.
