The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started work on a beautification project in Kala Ghoda. The project will focus on transforming internal lanes into pedestrian-friendly zones. It will also feature cobblestone paving, illumination, and landscaping.
This project comes after a successful trial run conducted in September. During the trial, the BMC restricted vehicular traffic on weekends in certain lanes. The public responded positively to it. Now, the authorities are moving forward with permanent changes.
The work has also begun with excavation in one of the five lanes designated for renovation. The lanes to be revamped include V B Gandhi Marg (Forbes Street), Rope Walk Lane, Saibaba Road, Rutherfield Street, and B Bharucha Road.
Each lane will be paved with cobblestones, aiming to restore the old-world charm of Kala Ghoda. In addition to cobblestones, the project includes basic landscaping and the installation of new lighting poles.
Delays caused by the monsoon and elections had postponed the start of the project. However, sources suggest that the BMC plans to complete the work by April 2025. The project will be carried out in phases. Once work on one lane is completed, construction will begin on the next. The traffic department has granted final approval, and vehicular movement has been stopped in the lane under construction.
A second phase is under consideration, which proposes a dedicated parking area to address local traffic congestion. However, this parking plan hasn't been approved yet.
