The Maharashtra government has decided to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and geo-tagging technology to strengthen the monitoring and auditing of development works undertaken by urban and rural local bodies across the state.
The new system will digitally track projects executed by municipal corporations, municipal councils, nagar panchayats and other local self-government institutions by using geo-tagged photographs and AI-based verification to monitor the progress and completion of works.
The initiative is aimed at improving transparency, accountability and efficiency in the implementation of public infrastructure projects while reducing irregularities, duplication and misuse of government funds. Officials said the technology will enable real-time monitoring of development works, allow authorities to remotely verify whether projects have been executed as approved, and help detect discrepancies at an early stage.
The AI-enabled audit mechanism is also expected to create a reliable digital record of civic projects, making inspections more effective and ensuring better utilisation of public resources. Through the initiative, the state government aims to modernise the monitoring of development works, improve governance and enhance public confidence in the implementation of projects by local bodies.
