Maharashtra Environment and Tourism minister Aaditya Thackeray on Thursday, September 3, inaugurated the site, which is now open for tourists.

This comes after the beautification project and clean-up of Mahim beach.

Taking it to Twitter, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) mentioned, “The newly revamped beach houses 1,000 trees, beautiful sculpture, an eco-friendly wooden gym, mesmerising artwork and a watchtower which offers breathtaking views of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.”

According to reports, the grimy Mahim Beach, one of the smaller and less glamorous cousins of Chowpatty and Juhu beaches, got an INR 4 crores environment-friendly makeover.

Before the BMC undertook the beautification project, the Mahim beach was defaced with piles of garbage, broken retaining walls around the beach, and unauthorised parking of heavy vehicles.

Apart from that, the beautification project included cleaning of the beach, removing encroachments of parked heavy vehicles and hutments, filling up the beach with up to five feet of sand as which was lost due to soil erosion, planting of trees, setting up pavements, garden furniture, a play area for children, and a 30-metre high viewing tower for tourists, that gives a panoramic view of the Arabian sea and the Bandra Worli sea link.

In addition, a few artificial sculptures, sculpted trees, besides a major tree plantation drive of 200 Suru saplings, 350 seedlings of Tikoma, 300 seedlings of Bamboo, and 200 of Chafya not only add to the beach beauty but also make it 'greener' and eco-friendly.

For decades, the approach to the Mahim sea stretch was clogged by illegally parked trucks or other big and small vehicles, the northern part was encroached by several hutments, the wall of the Mahim Police Colony on the south was crumbling, and the entire sea-front had become a den of local criminals.
