According to reports, as many as 127 theft cases have been registered against those in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

On Wednesday, September 22, a spokesperson from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) announced the same. He further announced that the registration of the cases is a part of an ongoing drive which is a massive check that is being conducted against rigging meters.

Moreover, the offenders have been booked under the Electricity Act and are reported to face huge penalties.

Meanwhile, The total amount owed to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) in power bills has now surpassed ₹1,000 crores, as per sources quoted by TOI.

The agency has disconnected the power supply of more than 2 lakh customers over non-payment of dues in 2021. Most of these accounts have pending dues since June 2020.

The total money owed from the Bhandup zone which covers Bhandup-Mulund, Thane, and Vashi, totalled ₹137 crores.

Meanwhile, residential customers in the Kalyan zone reportedly owed more than ₹350 crores, including ₹183 crores from Kalyan-Dombivli and ₹103 crores from the Vasai-Virar region. The Kalyan zone also includes Karjat/Kasara and Palghar.
