Employee unions from Mahagenco, Mahatransco, and MSEDCL (Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited) have called for an indefinite strike on Monday seeking frontline status for all its workers among a few other issues.
This comes as Monday’s talks between State Energy Minister Nitin Raut and union leaders didn’t reach the desired outcome leading to the continuation of the strike. However, Raut has urged union leaders to call off the strike.

Officials from all three agencies were quoted by TOI saying that power supply to hospitals, homes and offices will not be affected due to the strike.
An MSEDCL official further said that its staff will take care of all emergencies across oxygen plants, COVID hospitals, as well as restoration work for regions like Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg that were impacted by Cyclone Tauktae, which also caused some damage to Mumbai’s trees. Mahagenco, Mahatransco, and MSEDCL have a total of 90,000 employees combined.
General Secretary of the Maharashtra State Electricity Workers’ Federation, Krushana Bhoyar said, “Even if they (energy workers) do not get frontline worker benefits, they should at least get this status so that they can receive vaccination on priority. So far, nearly 400 workers have died while doing their duties.”
