Cyclone Tauktae: 812 trees uprooted in Mumbai; 70 per cent of foreign origin

Of the 812 trees that fell in Mumbai, a total of 504 were from private premises and 308 trees were in the public areas.

Cyclone Tauktae which hit the city of Mumbai and other districts recently has caused several damages adding to the troubles for the civic bodies. As per reports, the cyclone uprooted many trees in Mumbai and some of them were marked as exotic trees. 

On May 16 and 17, Mumbai faced the brunt of the cyclone which hit the city at a speed of approximately 114 kilometers per hour. Due to the strong winds caused by the cyclone, a total of 812 trees fell in Mumbai, of which 504 trees were in the private areas and 308 trees were in the public areas.

Reports released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that the municipal garden department has cleared the roads in a short period of time.

Approximately 70 per cent of the trees that fell in the city were exotic species (of foreign origin) such as Peltoforum, Gulmohar, Thespesia, Rain-Tree, Royal Palm, etc. A total of 249 trees were in the city area and 256 trees were in the eastern suburbs. The remaining 307 trees were in the western suburbs. Of these, 545 trees fell on May 16 and 17, 2021, and on May 18, officials reported that 267 more trees fell due to the storm.

Data also mentioned that the branches of 1454 trees fell also fell, of which, 798 branches belonged to the trees from private areas and 666 from the public areas. Besides this, the water supply was also cut off across several areas in Mumbai due to the trees that collapsed. The water supply in Wadala was restored after six hours of repair work.
