With the landfall of Cyclone Tauktae in Mumbai, tidal waves rattled the metallic barricades of the Gateway of India with strong winds drowning every other noise.

According to sources, in the Gateway of India area, a popular tourist destination in Mumbai, a huge boulder of rock formed as a rampart in the sea came out of the waves and fell away. Part of the embankment around the Gateway of India also fell.

Moreover, the cyclonic storm threw heaps of garbage back at the historic monument. According to officials, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) picked up four trucks of garbage from the premises of the monument in south Mumbai after the storm subsided.

On Tuesday, May 18, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar visited the monument and reviewed the damage caused in the premises and the cleanliness work undertaken there by the civic body. “There is no damage to the main structure, but the sea-facing safety wall and iron gates near the Gateway of India have been damaged. Due to the impact of the tidal waves and wind, some of the jetty stones came off and were thrown five metres away," Pednekar told PTI.

On the other hand, Cyclone Tauktae caused a lot of damage in Mumbai and a lot of trees were uprooted at many places in the city. Moreover, banner hoardings collapsed on vehicles in some parts of Mumbai.

Furthermore, many people were seriously injured due to the storm. According to reports, eight people were injured in various rain-related incidents in Chembur, Borivali and Andheri areas in Mumbai. Three of them have been admitted to the hospital and their condition is stable. The remaining five injured were treated and sent home.
