Due to Cyclone Tauktae, electricity in villages and some cities was affected for long hours across Maharashtra.

The biggest challenge before the state power utility firm was to restore electricity in villages and COVID care hospitals across the coastal Konkan belt.

Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and cabinet members in his visit to the Konkan region directed the officials to give priority to the restoration of power. Hence, the power company's personnel worked round the clock to ensure electricity was restored in record time.

It was a Herculean task in view of the difficult terrain and the fact that the entire infrastructure had collapsed in most villages, MSEDCL managing director, Vijay Singhal, was quoted by TOI.

He also said that an estimated 5,575 villages with 36.3 lakh consumers in seven districts were badly affected following the cyclone. Power has been restored in 5,532 villages (35.9 lakh consumers).

Singhal further mentioned that MSEDCL's biggest achievement was restoring power supply to all 306 coronavirus hospitals and vaccination centres as well as oxygen plants and refilling centres.

Since there was an advance warning about gusty winds in the wake of the cyclone, the power company and district administration officials had taken several precautionary measures to ensure that in the event of a major power failure, emergency works were not adversely affected, he said.

In view of the Cyclone Nisarga experience last year, the power company was well-prepared to tackle any kind of emergency, added Singhal.
