After allocating a separate climate budget, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to develop a green corridor on the Western Express Highway (WEH) and Eastern Express Highway (EEH).

For this, the civic body will plant five lakh bamboo trees along with other trees. The garden department of the BMC is looking for a feasible locations to grow them. 

The tendering work of the cultivation of plants in the process.

In the first phase, bamboo will be planted on both sides along the Eastern Express highway from Bhandup to Kannamwar Nagar in Vikhroli, which is six kilometers. As many as 8,100 bamboos will be planted on this route.

Explaining further, an official cited research revealed that bamboo emits 35 per cent more oxygen compared to trees. This is a great way to reduce the carbon footprint. Also, bamboo is a low-maintenance plant compared to others. The species of bamboo will decide as per the availability of land for plantation.

Apart from this, the road will also look aesthetically pleasing and if green walls are created, motorists will benefit. Also, an ecosystem can develop. The possibility of accidents due to tree falls will be reduced.
