The doctor, Bomsi Wadia, shares a close bond with his caretaker, Rajeev Jha, who has been caring for him for more than 20 years. Wishing to legally formalise this relationship and secure his legacy, Wadia attempted to adopt Jha. However, his application was rejected because Indian laws do not currently allow the adoption of adults.
Following this, he approached the Bombay High Court, which has now asked both the central and state governments to respond to the plea. The case has highlighted a legal gap, as existing adoption laws in India mainly permit adoption only of minors and do not clearly address such situations involving adults.
This case has sparked wider discussions about the need to update legal frameworks to recognise evolving family structures, especially in cases involving long-term caregiving, emotional bonds, and inheritance rights.
