The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken action against 76,235 illegal hawkers from January to May 2023. The policy formulated in 2014 to provide designated space to eligible hawkers is still in limbo. Hence, as directed by the Supreme Court (SC), the BMC continues its crackdown against hawkers who sit within the restricted 150-meter perimeter limit of the railway station premises.
To intensify its drive against illegal hawkers, the civic body had formed a ward-level surveillance team to keep a close watch on illegal stalls set up near railway stations. However, due to shortage of personnel in the encroachment department, there is difficulty in taking action.
Despite, the BMC has managed to take action against 1.60 lakh illegal hawkers between January to December 2022 and collected fines up to ₹2.24 crore.
Moreover, the BMC has prepared a list of 32,000 hawkers and sent it to the Labor Commission for the election process to select representatives of the Town Vending Committee from the community of hawkers.
