Thousands of motorists in Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai were affected on Monday after a breakdown in the Mahanagar Gas pipeline led to the closure of 164 CNG pumps across the region.
The disruption had a major impact on cab, taxi, and autorickshaw services. CNG supply is expected to be restored by Tuesday afternoon, though traffic disruptions may continue until then.
Queues at pumps
Most autorickshaws, taxis, and app-based cabs in Mumbai run on CNG. As soon as news of the disruption emerged on Sunday, drivers rushed to pumps across the city. Long queues formed through the night, leading to traffic congestion in several areas. The gas shortage has severely affected the public transport system.
