The canteen at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters has remained closed for nearly a month following action by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), leaving civic employees and visitors without access to the facility.

The FDA had conducted an inspection of the canteen and taken action over alleged violations. The facility was subsequently shut and has not resumed operations even after a month. The continued closure has now become an issue among BMC corporators and civic representatives, who have demanded that the canteen be reopened at the earliest. They have questioned the delay and sought clarity from the civic administration on the steps being taken to address the issues identified during the FDA inspection.

The canteen serves BMC employees, officials and visitors to the civic headquarters. Its prolonged closure has caused inconvenience to those working at or visiting the iconic municipal headquarters.

Civic authorities are expected to coordinate with the concerned department and the FDA to ensure that the required corrections are completed before the canteen resumes operations.

The matter has also raised questions about food safety and hygiene standards at facilities operating within government and civic premises. Representatives have called for the necessary improvements to be made without further delay so that the canteen can reopen while complying with food safety regulations.

The BMC administration is now under pressure to resolve the matter and restore the canteen service at its headquarters.
