The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has introduced a new and eco-friendly concept called the “Muvvi Trap” to control mosquito-borne diseases like Dengue and Malaria. Instead of focusing on killing mosquitoes like traditional methods, this system targets their breeding cycle.
This innovative solution was presented at an event organised under the Society for Mumbai Incubation Lab to Entrepreneurship (SMILE) initiative. The product was unveiled by Additional Municipal Commissioner Avinash Dhakne. Experts and scientists present at the event expressed that such technology could significantly help in effective mosquito control.
The “Muvvi Trap” works by using a special attractant liquid along with a mild insecticide to lure female mosquitoes. The mosquitoes lay eggs inside the trap, but the insecticide destroys the eggs, preventing the next generation from developing.
The trap remains effective for about four weeks and does not require electricity, making it cost-effective and easy to use. The civic body has also clarified that the materials used in the device are safe for human health.
This new method is expected to be highly beneficial in controlling mosquito-borne diseases on a large scale.
