Along with the dismissal of 55 employees, who were found guilty in the court, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration has taken strict action against the corrupt employees.

In addition, 53 employees against whom corruption charges are still pending and 81 employees against whom FIRs have been lodged are suspended from the service. These 55 employees have not only lost their jobs but have also lost their pension, gratuity and other benefits.

They have also been blacklisted and will not be allowed to work in any government or semi-government organization in future. The civic body officials claimed that BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal had set certain norms for work after taking charge. These included transparency in work and strict adherence to BMC rules. It was also decided that strict action would be taken against any form of corruption.

The BMC administration has claimed that they cooperate with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) which can file a charge sheet in the court but only after permission from the civic body.

Till date the ACB has 142 cases registered. Of these, the BMC has permitted to prosecute 105 cases. Out of remaining 37 cases, 30 cases are under investigation.

Hence these cases have not come to the BMC administration for approval. If they come in future, the administration will deal with them accordingly. For the remaining seven cases, the civil administration has conveyed its decision to the ACB and sanction for prosecution of three is in the final stages.
