According to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, 1,40,899 vehicles have been registered across all three divisions of Mumbai (MH1, MH2 and MH3) by mid-October 2023.


Amid rising vehicle density in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to develop new parking lots to accommodate over 22,000 vehicles in four densely populated wards. The decision was announced by city guardian minister Deepak Kesarkar in a press conference called on Wednesday. 


The BMC will start parking facilities in D ward's Kemps Corner, Walkeshwar, Grant Road, Breach Candy, Malabar Hill, Girgaon, Mumbai Central as well as G/South's Worli, Prabhadevi and Lower Parel. The facility in K/West will be provided in Andheri, while Bhandup and Kanjurmarg areas of the eastern suburban S ward will be the fourth ward.

With the continuous increase in the number of vehicles in Mumbai, complaints and grievances of citizens regarding shortage of parking spaces are also increasing. According to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, 1,40,899 vehicles have been registered in all three divisions of Mumbai (MH1, MH2 and MH3) till mid-October 2023. In 2022, 1,80,528 vehicles were registered and in 2021, 1,46,046 vehicles were registered.


Collectively, the total number of vehicles in Mumbai has crossed the 45 lakh mark. Of these, over 26.6 lakh vehicles are two-wheelers, 14.4 lakh are four-wheelers while over 11.62 lakh are goods vehicles, followed by over 2.3 lakh rickshaws. Meanwhile, the city also has a fleet of 2,060 ambulances.
